This is one of the most consequential scholarly books on Appalachia. David Hsiung, a history professor at Juniata College in Pennsylvania, establishes the point that much of the regional stereotypes about mountain people have their origins in the county seats of the mountain counties rather than anywhere else. Currently only in print in paperback for $45.
