The Tired Country Smiles: A Quilt of Mountain Memories by Nola Pease VanderMeer with Frederick L. Luddy

Nola Pease was a nurse in Leslie County, Kentucky, before the Frontier Nursing Service was established there! According to the historical marker that commemorates the work of her and her husband, Sam VanderMeer, she came to the Morris Fork Community in Breathitt County in 1923 and served there until her retirement in 1969. I remember seeing her walk up the hill from her home to town here in Berea when she was in her nineties!
