Davis Grubb (1919-1980) burst onto the national literary scene with the publication of Night of the Hunter in 1953. Although New York publishers brought out nine more of his novels and three story collections, up into the eighties after his death, none was better received than his first. Although he was born and raised in Moundsville, West Virginia, he lived most of his adult life in New York city, but moved from New Orleans to Clarkburg shortly before his death. James Agee wrote the screen play for the movie version of Night of the Hunter.
