Lillian Smith (1897-1966) lived in Rabun County, Georgia, the state's most northeastern county,  She and her partner, Paula Snelling, edited and published three literary magazines. Her 1944 novel, Strange Fruit was a best-seller, and this 1949 collection of essays established her as a leading Southern advocate for Civil Rights as well as an astute commentator on Southern life.
