Jane Stephenson grew up in Banner Elk, North Carolina, and is now retired and living  back there. She lived in Berea, Kentucky, for several decades, and while there created the New Opportunity School for Woman, a short-term residential program designed to help working class mountain women achieve their dreams, especially of pursuing an education. This book tells the stories of nine mountain women whose lives were transformed by this program. The program continues to thrive, now with additional locations besides Berea.
