Caroline Terry was born into slavery in 1833 and died in 1941 at the age of 108. Most of her life was spent on the eastern slope of the Blue Ridge Mountains in and around Sperryville. Her first three children were "Big House Children," fathered by her owner, but her last three were were the product of her marriage to Jeffrey Terry. The author of this book, her story, is her great-grandson who listened to her stories until he was twelve and she died.
