This is the only overview of Appalachian African-Americans by an African-American author. Hayden grew up in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and has taught at three Appalachian Universities, including Western Carolina University. He is currently Professor of Social Work at York University in Toronto. He is a Past-President of the Appalachian Studies Association. The book includes not just data, but photographs and interviews with rural Appalachian African-Americans; not just a treatment of Black Appalachian Identity, but also discussion of the realities of discrimination.
