These TWO ISSSUES remain the only two book-length sources on this subject, and they are outstanding. The first begins with a twenty-page introduction to the subject by Fred J. Hay, a professor at Appalachian State and includes essays by such experts as Bill Lightoot and Ceci Conway, who wrote a book on Black banjo players. The second also starts with an introduction by Dr. Hay followed by a Directory of African-Appalachian Musicians and "The 1850 Mance Index for Appalachia, followed by a Bibliography on the subject by Mark Freed. This work is essential and available nowhere else. The Journal is now defunct.
