This book is the autobiography of Dr. Wharton 1873-1959), a pioneering physician on Tennessee's Cumberland Plateau. In 1884 the American Missionary Association founded The Pleasant Hill Academy in western Cumberland County. Dr. May Wharton arrived in 1917 with her husband who was named principal of the Academy, and founded a small hospital there. Connie West came here to have her first daughter, because her husband, Don, was deeply involved in labor issues, and she needed a place to go for care that wasn't dangerous. She chose Pleasant Hill because of Dr. Wharton's reputation as a skilled doctor and as a caring person. May Wharton also started a retirement community designed for retired service workers of modest means, called Uplands. My mother went there and first lived in one of the over-one-hundred homes on the 500 acre campus and then moved into the central facility when she needed to. She died there.
