Sidney Saylor Farr (1933-2011) grew up in Stoney Creek, a coal camp in Bell County, Kentucky. She left school in the seventh grade when her mother became bed-ridden and needed her to tend her nine younger siblings. She married at 15 and took correspondence classes to earn a high school diploma, persisting after her husband threw her books in the fire. They lived in Indianapolis before returning to Kentucky to live in Berea in 1962 where he husband worked as a janitor, and she as a secretary, including for Mountain Life and Work, the magazine of the Council of the Southern Mountains. It took her years, enrolling in the one class a semester allowed by employees to finally graduate in 1980. Then she obtained a job in the College Library's special collections and edited Appalachian Heritage from 1985 until 1999. In 1990, her grandson whom she mostly raised, Ritchie, a very popular high school student and football quarterback, was killed in a car accident. Sidney worked as a volunteer with the New Opportunity School for Women and with nursing homes encouraging other women to write. In addition to this bibliography, her first book, she published two books about a truck driver who had a near-death experience, two recipe collections, and a memoir published by the University Press of Kentucky.
