Wess Harris has done a great job preserving and displaying artifacts from the days when coal was king in West Virginia and editing books that illuminate that history. One of the greatest contributions of this book is that it exposes the practice of prostitution at some company stores. What a horrific circumstance for a widow whose husband has just been killed in the mine to have to face the choice of either being evicted or working as a prostitute upstairs in the company store. I was the first to publish the article in this book by Mike Kline that first exposed this practice.
