James Mooney (1861-1921) was an ethnographer for the Smithsonian Institution's Bureau of American Ethnology. He lived with the Cherokees and learned from them, especially the elder medicine man, Swimmer and in 1891 published, for the Bureau The Sacred Formulas of the Cherokees and in 1900 The Myths of the Cherokee. Charles and Randy Elder were brothers who ran Nashville's biggest used book store, and in 1982, they put these two books together into one. These are the definitive works in this field.
