This is the only history of the Cherokee people written by an enrolled Cherokee author, and the only history officially endorsed by the Cherokee Nation. Robert Conley (1940-2014) is one of the very most prolific Cherokee authors, best known for his Real People series of novels that go back into the earliest know eras of the life of his people. Although Conley spent most of his life in Oklahoma, he came to North Carolina late in his life to be a distinguished professor at Western Carolina University.
