Cormac McCarthy is one of the leading contemporary authors of the Western World. He has won the Pulitzer Prize in fiction, the National Book Award, and the National Book Critics Award, He was born in 1933 and raised in Knoxville, Tennessee, where his father was a lawyer for the TVA.   He lived in Knoxville and adjoining Blount County, Tennessee, until he was in his forties and then lived twenty years in El Paso before moving near Santa Fe where he now lives. Suttree is the fourth and last of his first novels all set in East Tennessee before he began to set his works in the West. It explores the lives of the Knoxville underclass which McCarthy followed closely as a result of childhood friendships and personal fascination. A favorite passage of many readers of this book is the one that depicts a young man attempting to have sex with a watermelon.
