Effie Waller (1879-1960) was born to former slaves on their farm on Chloe Creek in Pike County, Kentucky. She worked as a teacher in both Kentucky and Tennessee. Her poetry was published in Harpers and other national magazine, and she published three books of poetry. Songs of the Month and this book, Rhymes from the Cumberland, both in 1904. In 1908 she married Charles Smith, and took his name. He was a Pike County Deputy Sheriff who was killed three years after their marriage while serving a warrant. In 1918 Effie Waller Smith moved to Wisconsin and is buried in Neenah, Wisconsin.
