There are official road signs as you drive into Danville, Kentucky, that tell you that you are entering a town where a former Kentucky Poet Laureate grew up. That's Frank X Walker, an African-American man who grew up in the projects here and has gone on to a distinguished career as an English Professor at the University of Kentucky. He is a dynamic and engaging presenter, a winner of many awards, and a poet whose works have enriched our understanding of historical Black Americans and have given us insights into his own very personal moments. This is a collection that has no theme and does not center around a historical figure other than himself. In the Appalachian Studies community, Frank X Walker is best know as the person who coined the term Affrilachian synthesizing the Black experience and the Appalachian experience.
"Black Box contains many of Frank X Walker's finest poems. He is one of Kentucky's -- and the nation's -- most powerful and necessary voices." --Gurney Norman.
