This book was published by the National Park Service. The heart of the book is the full, revised, text of Highland Homeland by Wilma Dykeman and Jim Stokely. The Park Service has added a short introduction and a final word about the visiting the Park with a bibliography. At the time she wrote this, Wilma Dykeman (1920-2006) was the Tennessee State Historian and living in her home in Newport, Tennessee, overlooking the Smokies. Jim is her son. It is difficult to imagine a better person to provide a short  overview of the history of the Smokies  in this attractive package. Wilma Dykeman's attention to the story of the Cherokees and to the economy of the area is exemplary.
