This book provides an in-depth look at five mountain women known for singing ballads. All five lived on Beech Mountain on the Avery/Watauga County line iin North Carolina. Photographs, the words and music to many traditional ballads, and analysis are provided, but the emphasis is on the lives of these women and their views of the old songs they sing. The author, Thomas Burton (b. 1935) is professor Emeritus of English at East Tennessee State University.
