Annie Dillard was fresh out of college - Hollins where she roomed with Lee Smith - when she decided to spend a year on Tinker Creek immersed in nature and then write about it. She was as surprised as anyone when her first book describing what she considered a "pilgrimage" into nature shot up in sales and then garnered a coveted Pulitzer Prize! This book, perhaps more than any of her quite-successful subsequent books, has maintained a faithful readership ever since. Her professor, now ex-husband, R. H. W. Dillard, has also gone on to write more books and inspire more students.
