Paul Brett Johnson (1947-2011) was one of Appalachia's most outstanding illustrators of children's picture books. He grew up in Mousie in Knott County, but stayed on in Lexington after graduating from the University of Kentucky. His partner, Tony Huston quoted Paul Brett as saying, "I’m not going to be a Rembrandt or a da Vinci, but I can paint pretty pictures, and I’m going to be happy doing that." Some of the books that Paul Brett illustrated he also wrote.
