Paul W. Patton (1921-1999) grew up in Rix Mills in the hills of Muskingum County, Ohio. He left to serve in World War II and then for a career in education. He returned to his home town in 1985 and began to paint it the way he remembered it, quickly establishing himself as an exemplary folk artist.
