In April of 2005, I was part of a group of authors, organized by Kentuckians for the Commonwealth, who toured Eastern Kentucky strip mines. We heard testimony by local residents at the Hindman Settlement School, then directed by Mike Mullins. We received an aerial tour of sites, walking tours, and driving tours, including meeting in the houses of people whose homes were impacted by mountain-top removal. At the end of the tour, I was the moderator of a panel discussion held on the campus of Eastern Kentucky University. This book is our protest and our report of this immersion in this significant issue. Missing Mountains contains the writings of 35 distinguished Kentucky authors including Gurney Norman, George Ella Lyon, Maurice Manning, Artie Ann Bates, Loyal Jones, and many more. I was the co-author of the article, "The Long Struggle" with Jerry Hardt, which attempts to relay the history of opposition to strip mining in Kentucky.
