Ruth White (1942-2017) was born and raised in Whitewood, in Buchannan County - the Virginia county that adjoins both West Virginia and Kentucky. She is the author of more than a dozen impressive youth novels, including Belle Prather's Boy which was a Newbery Honor Book in 1997.
