This book takes a close look at the strikes of Birmingham coal miners in 1908 and 1920 and affirms that despite the efforts of the powerful to divide the miners by race, they held together.  In addition to his focus on class conflict in the white community, he also examines class division in the Black community. "In this lucid and supremely readable study, Brian Kelly challenges the prevailing notion that white workers were the main source of resistance to racial equality in the Jim Crow South." At the time that he wrote this book, Brian Kelly taught in Belfast, Ireland.
